Friday Night Magic

So last night I got to play FNM for the first time in a month. I had a very busy prior four weeks, with a family reunion, visit to the lake house with my friends, and Otakcon so I always always away from town on Friday. I really enjoyed all of these things but I also enjoy FNM, and last night was my first time with the new rules. They didn't make any difference at all for me. Last night was also the first night that I played my esper beatdown style deck. Adding white really helped me out.

Here is how the evening went.

1) I matched up against someone playing pure mill, and beat him 2 games to 0. His deck just couldn't keep up with my creatures, or he missed his counter spell draws or something. For those who don't know mill is a strategy where you win by removing cards from your opponents library until they can't draw anymore cards, thereby losing the game.

2) The second person I played was playing a red and black, haste, creature removal deck. This was a harder match up, I won 2-1 somehow. I won the first game because of a few good draws early on, and Esper Shieldmage sweeping there board. The second game I lost even though it was close, because she shut my mana down early and I didn't get the draws I would have needed to win. The third game I did much better and she didn't seem to draw the removal she needed to keep up with my board generation.

3) The third person I played was running warp world revolution, where you don't do much but generate permanents for the first few turns then play warp world, and hopefully if your lucky get nasty unbeatable creatures. The first time I played him, he got his warp world off but it ended up in my favor, he got a cloud thresher, but I got my shieldmage so my creatures survived. The second time around he got much luckier and got two hellkites and killed me quickly. The third time I killed him before he could play warpworld. 2-1

4) When we broke for the top 8, which I made for the first time, I ended up playing a discard control deck. I beat him the first game, he just couldn't get rid of all my creatures, though he did slow me down. The second time he get rid of my boarder post and I had a hard time recovering, but I did put out a much better effort, in the end I still lost, but it was a good game. The final game for the evening however, He thoughtseized my boarderpost, and I didn't draw another land for 6 turns. It was still a close game, but it wasn't nearly as much fun, and my opponent who is a really nice guy said as much.

Overall I did really well, but I would have liked to have made it though another round to the top 4.

I went 7-4 for the evening winning all my swiss matches and losing my first bracket match.
